    It is quite interesting that idea on Hylia having some of the other Goddesses essence in her... would explain why she was more than a guardian and needed to relinquish her Goddess status in order to be able to use the Triforce.


    1) Recognition of the three goddesses ever went out of fashion. When people refer to them as 'old', I take that to be a literal truth: they did come before Hylia, and they ARE old. The special adoration the people of Skyloft have for Hylia is probably because of the direct connection she had with the people there - she is a local deity, if you will - but I don't think the three deities ever stopped being recognised as the original creators and supreme source of everything.

    I think it is a very good point. It could be that they are actually being talking with reverence. However, I also take it that it is not so much that they say "old" but that they lump them together. There is no sign of their names, recalling of them being three or something that indicates they aren't just vaguely in people's minds now, hence the losing popularity conclusion.

    I actually believe the original location of the Temple of Hylia is Lake Hylia.
    Reason 1: It's called Lake Hylia.
    Reason 2: The Sealed Grounds is a great big hole in the ground. You know, like what you'd expect to be liable to flooding.
    Reason 3: The Sky Temple in TP (Skyloft?) is located above Lake Hylia.

    I never even thought of tying those games together by location like that. It really makes sense.

    I still have no idea about the ToT. My Fanon has been that there are at least two Temples of Time. I am not sure how the Temple of Hylia will play out in my Fanon, as I have yet to reach taht part in SS.

    My thoughts are that you should share some of your thoughts here too, and I also wonder if you were the author of said fun article. Either way sounds like a nice recurring theme for thursdays so good luck getting that running in (what I assume is) your website. :)


    With that being said, I like the discussion idea by itself. Some of the members of the forum are familiar with both games and franchises so it could spur a quite interesting discussion or at least remembrance.

    As for me, that is like trying to compare what's better between to condiments. Both games were recognised as top in their franchises during their respective times. The fact that people are very excited with Cloud is in Smash and because FFVII is being remastered speaks volumes on how much the game still matters for many people.

    Ocarina of Time had its remake for the 3DS which made alright in sales. Many people, myself included, still keep it high in their personal tops.


    Battle System: I rather Ocarina of Time. I like to block, move and attack freely rather than waiting for turn. It is dynamic you can engage or avoid the battles. FFVII battles find you, ready or not. This is not to say I don't enjoy RPG classic battles, I love getting the battle music, and celebrating victory and getting good spoils.

    Characters: I find it hard to decide. I think both had highly recognizable characters but for both they were kind of shallow if you think about it. Both protagonists kind of lived a lie in different ways, hahah. However excluding the main four Zelda-Link Aeris-Cloud), at conventions I see more Tifas and Vincents than what I see other Ocarina of Time Sages or farm girls. This leads me to think FFVII characters had a bigger impact.

    Collectables: Ocarina of Time. It never felt unfair with the missions. I liked getting the extra items like bottles, Biggoron Sword, etc. hunting the heart pieces was also useful, perhaps the skulltulla chase is the one no many like, but I enjoyed it too, reward included.

    Depth: FFVII. It had a more complex story. It had a more complex inventory system. It had a more complex fight menu... hmm.. perhaps I am mistaking depth with complexity.

    Graphics: FFVII bothered me that they were no constant, some cutscenes looked nice while most were too pixelated even for a pre-rendered thing. Ocarina of Time kept the same quality and it was pretty good looking for its time, I also liked how the FMV were rendered with whatever you were wearing. The textures also were pretty nice to immerse you in this land.

    Zelda Lore or FF Tradition: I rather my zelda lore. That is my knee jerk reaction, but then I remember not as many games and lore were implemented back then. Still Hyrule, Triforce, Zelda, Ganon(dorf), Master Sword were element present in several of the past games. Sure, Malon's not like Cid, but Zelda does have their traditions, like having Link starting the game being a sleepy head... LA because of your naufrague, ALttP from your bed, OoT pretty much cemented the joke for many future games. Anyway I enjoy both games traditions, moggles and chocobos are pretty much to be expected for each game now.

    Narrative: Both do pretty good their own thing, but while ooT narrative is like go to X area and collect X thing. FFVII was more plot driven and actually had you wanting to reach different destinations not knowing what to expect. You trained Aerith, went huge lengths to get taht super ability only she can use, gave her the best equipment and weapons she could have and... Narrative doesn't warn you. You lose it all.

    Replay Value: OoT. It is shorter and easier to play. Still, after playing a game like FFVII, specially if it was your first RPG, you will probably want to start over once you realise you did so many mistakes and could have done so much better. getting that special weapon or power that appears in a very tight frame of game can be compelling, if just for the bragging rights.

    RPI (Ratings Percentage Index): Not sure I get this correctly so I have no comment.

    Scope: I am being dumb so I feel like depth and narrative kind of shows some scope.

    TM (Transmission Medium): Discs versus cartridges. I like cartridges better because they load faster and are easier to take care of. However disks hold more. FFVII just wouldn't had existed the way we know it on the N64. Thye both made good use of their respective mediums.

    Villain: Just going by the games and ignoring Legacy: Sephiroth. The backstory and his actions through the game are way more interesting. He also has a theme I still randomly sing from time to time.

    Yeah, I normally have every Zelda or Zelda related game preordered upon availability. I often put new games next to my four copies of Zelda's Adventure. :^_~:

    Oh mai gah, you have CD-I games. You're probably one of the very few that can seriously talk bad about those games because I you actually would know what you're talking about beyond AGVN videos and Youtube poops. A lot collectibles you have gotten there. Did you kept them as they came out or did you started your collection recently?

    They are OoT medallions: Forest, Fire (I presume, Link's arm blocks the view) and water to the left, Light, Shadow, Spirit. Dungeons, sages... I don't know. I can see the crest at the top but I don't think I have ever seen the whole emblem in itself before. Then again I haven't finished Skyward sword so you guys might actually recognise it.

    would you like to hear future Zelda music becoming a little more exotic, or staying the way it is?


    I don't mind variety on the music. I think part of the charm in Zelda tracks is that some games they can really change. Think Gerudo Valley then switch to the Forest Temple music.
    I don't care how exotic it is, so long it fits well the location, situation and whatever it is trying to convey. I think being flashy just because could backfire but I can appreciate the need to make the music stand on its own instead of just being something that sounds like the base formula for adventure-game music Track #22.

    A pretty cool topic to theorise about. I really enjoyed reading how you guys try to put things together.

    I absolutely agree that the rise of the veneration towards the Triforce helped immensely to bring the creators to people's knowledge. Another reason the Triforce is important is because it ties the idea of how the world is created, by the time of the Hero of Time, the myths passed to Link completely neglect any mention of Hylia or being part of a city in the sky. I can only recall a reference to a belief of Hylian ears being elongated so they can hear the calling of the Goddesses.

    Linkle and I agree that Hylia worship may still exhist in Hyrule and has either took on a different form as leadership through the Royal Family, or just lost popularity eventually fading to have very few followers left.

    Maybe it is a bit of both: I think Hylia is now mostly known as one of the legends told by the Royal Family and if they are followers around, probably they don't know that Zelda is the reincarnation.

    The reason for Hylia fading from fame in Hyrulean legends, might had to do with her being incarnated in Zelda. I would even suggest the same Royal Family tried to hush this fact. As it stands having people drooling greed over the TriForce was dangerous enough like to have people targeting the Princess as an attempt to destroy the cycle in hopes to weaken divine intervention. I think the Kingdom tried to switch the adoration into the three Goddesses instead and just passed among them the real origin story. Even though, probably other versions were also taught orally from the same residents they probably lose credence or were blended into the Golden Goddesses as the time went by.

    Regarding the identity of the Goddesses of Time, in the Oracle of ages, Nayru controls time, which subtly suggest it might just be another name for her, while another game, I think Phantom Hourglass, instead describes Farore as the Goddess of Time and Courage. This is somethinG I wanted to say from when I started reading about the possible connection but as I kept on reading, you guys really make sense. I never thought much of Zelda being the Sage of "Time" in Ocarina of Time. Let's say the knowledge of Hylia is only another Royal Family legend passed down by generations, it would make sense Zelda used her in her prayers to keep Link safe. I don't know why I never really stopped to think about that connection.

    Anyway, during SS a lot of crazy things happens and then we have wars in Hyrule, it is not crazy to think that some portals or stuff, made some of the Hylians separate into a parallel world (or outside the kingdom) and they didn't lose all of their knowledge. If Hylia was known as the Goddesses of Time and this split came before she vanished from memory in Hyrule (between before and just after SS) then it would make sense that the believe in a Goddess of Time was maintained even if her name in itself was forgotten. We know they're parallel to Hylians but they never call themselves that, which implies they don't share the Hylia knowledge or at the very least, said knowledge is fragmented and missing important details.

    Zelda Cavern is actually an old website, over a decade old. We're trying to rebuild the site fresh, the forums were restarted almost two years ago and while we're right now a small community, I am very happy with our journey so far.

    I'm currently about to begin on the master quest Nintendo 3DS but I still like the original on my in 64 better for the simple fact I can stream it on my 60 inch TV. It looks horrible but I don't have to pay a bunch of extra money to add a USB port to stream to my TV

    Hahah. I think that having it in a home console just make it easier, same if you use an emu to Stream in twitch or something.

    Yeah. More or less I had heard it flunk. I didn't know what went wrong. I just know it sounded like somethong truly promising and that idea behind was what got my interest.

    On the other hand, I heard there will be a hand held steam console which sounds great. I am actually pretty excited to heard and I hope they manage make something good out of it.
