Yeah, I originally got excited about it because it was supposed to be a "back to basics" RPG from what I'd read. (I actually recall gushing about how excited I was in the Spira Online shoutbox. It's one of the very few games in my life that I bought brand new). Due to some futzing with save files, I never actually beat it. But, about 2 years ago, my girlfriend Morrie and I decided we should try playing some games together. So we played that.

We still never finished it though, because of the aforementioned not-goodness.

I think, actually, that my younger siblings ended up playing through the whole thing. So the purchase wasn't a total waste.

    It was gorgeous.

Plus, the idea of a multiplayer RPG, where different party members can be controlled by different players during combat, was pretty neat. But the implementation was so fucking bad, with the camera constantly locked on to player. Player 1 had to constantly make sure they were far enough away from the enemies so that the camera would zoom out enough for player 2 to see themselves.

One of my favorite games is a free indie game called Iji.

A few months ago when I told someone about it, they told me it sounded a lot like ABUSE. I played a little bit of ABUSE on a website that ran old DOS games through a browser, and it was really good. But I hate playing games through a browser, so I want to get it working on my own computer.

The GBC also loses some points for using actual batteries to power itself. The rechargeable battery on the DS is a game changer for me.

I wonder if the battery in my copy of Oracle of Seasons still works. It never occurred to me that those games were old enough for the save batteries to die.

I've been trying to get a copy of "ABUSE" that I can run reliably for awhile now. Old DOS games are so good, but some of the most difficult games to really get ahold of.

Old DOS games might be the ones that I regret missing out on the most.

@Sardonic Pickle Blood Money is by a zillion miles the best hitman game. So good. All anyone ever wanted was more of that, jsut expanded. Then we got hitman absolution, which is the best argument for squeenix to never get involved in an action title again (although they did make sleeping dogs which I am currently enjoying)

Hitman 1: Honestly just too old to be very playable anymore.
Hitman 2: BETTER NOT RUN, OR YOU'LL DIE!
Hitman 3: A clunky HD remake in disguise.
    Hitman 4: Pretty much perfection.

I actually enjoyed what parts of Absolution I played, though I lost interest at about level 4, so it can't have been that good.

I've written a hundred different positive reviews of Shovel Knight at this point, I hardly even know what to say about it anymore.

It is a perfect game, without any notworthy flaws. And it does so very many things right.

If you have any love at all for the 2D platformer, play Shovel Knight. It puts every other entry in the genre to shame.

I have all of the Mario Games and all of the Harry Potter games for the Wii. Those are the type of games that I normally enjoy playing. But then I'm a big Harry Potter fan and I grew up on Mario so.......

I'm a humongous, ginormous Harry Potter fan. Are the Wii games really worth playing, though? They looked pretty bad to me, but I never really gave them a chance.

I spent many happy hours playing Tales of Symphonia; though recent attempts to play the game have revealed to me that it's actually really bad.

Eternal Darkness is eternally underrated. One of the only horror games I've ever really enjoyed, I think. Also, the first level of Sonic Adventure 2 is good.

I'm partial to the original DS. I haven't been able to get my hands on a 3DS yet. I'm not fond of anything 3D though, so I'm not really stoked to give it a try.

Also, the old gameboy color should get an honorable mention for being lightweight, tiny, and having a phenomenal library of games.

I think @Sardonic Pickle will have input on this.

I only just started playing this game, but it just feels wrong somehow. I can't place my fingers on it.

It feels close enough to a classic SMB game that I find myself playing it with confidence. I run and jump with the self-assurance of an old pro. But I keep just missing the mark. Falling it a pit I think I should have avoided, getting killed by an enemy I could swear I jumped on.

Am I just being cantankerous? Do other people have this issue at all?

The second game I ever owned on the Nintendo 64. I remember feeling like such a failure because I couldn't beat it without cheats. Little did I realize at the time that when I was 28 years old, I would still count SotE as one of the hardest fuckin' games ever.

Even the cheat was difficult to enter. I needed to keep a pile of rubber bands next to the console, because it was impossible for me to press all the necessary buttons with my fingers.

We've been having fun with NES tracks, and there are easily just as many good tracks on the SNES. I'll start us out with a couple oddball picks of my own:

First level of Contra III has some pretty dissonant music. Action packed, frantic to the point of being schizophrenic, and just oozing with a kind of Terminator style.

The 7th Saga is a game I discovered when I used Kaaza to download a pack of "every SNES game ever." It's an RPG where you walk around in a Mode 7 3D world. Pretty neat, with a very soothing, lovely overworld theme.

I mean, as a series, I think Mario Kart has as much life in it as the Mario series itself. Perhaps even a little more. Racing is literally the oldest human game there is.

Specifically though, I think the SNES Mario Kart is pretty much a dead game for me. I've never really been a fan of racing games to start with, but the faux-3D, Mode 7 racing games on the SNES are the worst for me. I can't play either this, or F-Zero worth a damn.

    Doublde Dash is my favorite.

As a kid, these were the fucking tops for me. I played Ninja Gaiden 2 the most, but NG1 was phenomenal as well. I confess, NG3 has always been too difficult to hold my attention. I actually haven't played any of the rebooted games.

I never really understood the game's powerup system. But the jumps were tight, and the sword swing was instantaneous, and the way enemies "popped" when they died was really satisfying.

They did occasionally feel a little cheap with the fucking eagles and bats that seem impossible to track. And the enemy respawn could be unforgiving. Bird bumped you a few feet back? Step forward and it spawns again!

Still, high quality games. I sometimes feel like the only person who really played them. Does anyone else have memories of these?

Yesterday I would have asked something completely inappropriate. Something to set you off balance so I could assert dominance as the rockin'ist dude on the forums. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut they've told me I have to stop doing that sort of thing now.

So instead I will merely say welcome to the forums, and ask what is the most blood you've ever seen in a single place?
