Wow! I didn't think any less of you when I thought you were using RPG Maker or anything. It's a pretty decent tool. But having done all the work from scratch is pretty impressive!

So if I understand you correctly, the game will have tons of different dialogue options all throughout the game, which create branching paths through the story? That's ambitious, but could be really cool when complete.

Would the effects of choices be hidden, or would the player have some idea of what each choice could mean for them down the line?

At some point you were sitting in front of a computer with a blank text box that said "Username:" to the left of it. You put something unique in that box. Why?

At this point, I've been "Link Skywalker" for fully half of my life. In 2001 my parents were finally going to allow me to make an email address all my own. At the time, the two most important things in my life were The Legend of Zelda video games, and Star Wars. Thus, my email address became Link_Skywalker_2001@yahoo.com.

Within a week I'd changed it to LinkSkywalker14@Yahoo.com, and I've used either "Linkskywalker" or "Linkskywalker14" to sign up nearly every account I've made since then. I feel like it's important to maintain a continuity with my username, so that people will always be able to recognize me. Although these days I prefer to go by "LS," because neither TLoZ nor Star Wars is really that big of a part of my life anymore.

AMUSING SIDE-NOTE: I am not the first Link Skywalker. I learned, about a year after I made the username, that there was another guy in the Zelda community who went by that name. He was apparently a huge asshole or something, because I actually got shadowbanned from a few forums because people mistook me for him.

But I own linkskywalker.com, so I'm the real one now.

@Pikachew was kind enough to share some of her creative work, which I was pretty critical of. It's only fair I give her the same opportunity.

Death Touched is a piece of short fiction I wrote earlier this year. I normally write either games, essays, or porn. So doing a piece of fantasy fiction was a departure for me. But it's something I'd like to do more of.

I did not know you could mention people on this forum. It's nice to see how much forum software has improved in the years since I last used one regularly.

    This is RPG Maker, right?

It looks like you've put in some good effort already. Though based on the video and screenshots, I don't really know yet what would set your game apart. The 4th wall breaking humor at the start is amusing, but aside from that things are standard fare so far. Confused, borderline amnesiac protagonist. Chrono Trigger opening. (Mom tells you to wake up or you'll be late. You go downstairs to meet your best friend of the opposite gender.) Goblin enemies. Etc. Obviously I haven't seen much of what you have in mind yet, but currently you're skewing towards cliche in your design.

I don't mean to be discouraging. I'm never sure how critical I'm supposed to be when people share their creative works. I know that, for me personally, I find it really difficult to get people to give me honest & constructive feedback. Everybody always wants to say "that's great" so they don't hurt my feelings. Which isn't really useful, it's just an attempt to avoid conflict. So I try to treat others as I'd like to be treated in that regard.

One strong criticism I do have is the music. That shit is ear-bleedingly repetitive. I know music is pretty much the most difficult thing to get your hands on, but there has to be something better available than that.

I'd be really interested to see how this develops. I hope you'll show us more soon.

The bridge crossing scene in Final Fantasy.

Cutscenes weren't really a thing back then. So having this sort of secondary title screen pop up after 40 minutes of gameplay was a huge surprise. And the still shot of the adventurers cresting a hill, looking back at their homeland receding behind them, was a really beautiful piece given the limitations of the NES. Couple that with the first appearance of my favorite FF leitmotif, starting out slow, building into something hopeful, and finally descending into something wistful.

That was a seminal moment for me. Even though it wasn't the first FF game I played, it moved me.

Also, the opening song to The Dark Sword of Chaos. Holy shit:

NES games really concentrated some of their best music in the opening song, didn't they? =P

Yea, I agree.. really there's alot of things indie games could provide more these days.

I don't think I've actually purchased a AAA release since I bought Dishonored back in 2012 or 2013. And while I'm certainly going to be buying Fallout 4 later this year, I've personally found that Indie games are pretty much the only thing I play anymore.

I'd actually be really interested to know where he is today, the kid who won the contest. That's the weird sort of accomplishment which makes him a fucking legend in the Zelda community, but probably wouldn't have any actual impact on his life.

You make sense LinkSkywalker. While most sites would follow your methods. I personally do not care if they are spread out over boards.

That may be the wrong attitude to have lol but screw it. I want stuff to be readily accessible by what makes sense to me. If that sounds like a legitimate answer.

I'm not here to tell you what to do with your boards. You do what you feel is best for your boards, and I'll stick around and enjoy them either way.

I have a background in building arguments, and a background in forum administration. I'm sorry if my feedback came off as imperious or demanding. I really just wanted to make sure my thoughts were fully understood. =)

    Nice to meet you, Bintsy.

Tell us about yourself. What are your hobbies aside from video games? What's your situation in life? What's something that makes you happy?

By the by, in the event that you had a soul before you joined the forums, the fine print in the TOS you agreed to before joining stipulates that you forfeit that soul to me. Sorry, it's an awkward little tradition, but them's the breaks.

I imagine this is the song most people will put down here. Mega Man 2 - Dr. Wily's Castle. It's perfect, and it's my all-time favorite song from the NES.

You're not wrong. The opening theme to Megaman 2 is just about the best piece of chiptune music I've ever heard.

I don't know if I'd call it my singular favorite, but the title theme for Punch Out is certainly in my top 20:

When I was a teenager there was a band called The Minibosses that did covers of chiptunes (before it was cool, mind you. =P) Their rendition of Punch Out is what I used to psyche myself up to coding each day.
