The -ano kind of means that it dwells there so it makes sense
Paisano gets translated as countryman.
Niw you really got me thinking. In English country can mean either the nation you live in or a small populated area. Pais just means nation right now.
But it might be the humble origins of most of the people traveling to the neighbouring country to get a job as ghe origin if the word.
I should definitely look more onto this.
