Despite the variety, do you actually feel limited by the representation of the sports genre?

I do yes. There aren't many anime for a specific sport. Do you guys feel the same? If not, how come?

I am not too much into sports, but then again Captain Tsubasa got me into soccer from a young age, so I am sure they can make almost any sport exciting, hahah.

In that sense, yeah, it is not very often you see sport based anime.
