• I stumbled on this application to read comics several years ago and I have read stories that I really liked and I have seen how the app has evolved, not always for better. Back when I joined it felt pretty easy to check what was soon after renamed as "canvas" which is the free platform where anyone can upload their comic, so long it is within their stipulations such as keep it safe for work, be an original story, etc and then you had the originals, which were the stories that webtoon contracted to be serialised.

With Canvas you set your own schedule, but the dream was getting picked by webtoon and offered a contract. Then you had to deliver on schedule but you'd had a team backing you up. I excitedly saw many stories announce that the canva version was going to be deleted because they became an original. Then be all excited to start over with the story. You'd see the polish, in a good way. I really liked that canva or original didn't feel like much of a difference. Both had pretty cool and interesting stories to explore.

Nowadays most originals are trapped behind paywall right after they are finished. And plenty of originals if they don't do super amazing in the first season, they have to hurry up on the next season to tie everything up. It's been disappointing and bittersweet seeing great stories with rushed endings. Because of the contract is not like they can just take it and continue it elsewhere.

Funny, I started the thread mostly because I want to talk about the comics themselves, see if anyone knows them and have been reading and see what you recommend. Haha.

here's a few of the many I followed through the years I have enjoyed.
Of the finished ones, I have no idea which ones are locked.

    • Eleceed - ongoing
    • Jungle Juice - ongoing
    • Marionetta - ongoing
    • Camlost - ongoing <-- This is from someone I know in real life. I loved hearing about the stories in her comic and I am very excited to see it getting done. :grinning:
    • Hooky
    • Morgan and Oz
    • Gremory Land - thriller
    • Stagtown - thriller
    • Seed
    • Nonesuch - thriller
    • The Witch and the Bull - ongoing
    • My Boo
    • Rise from Ashes
    • Humor Me
    • Room of Swords
    • The Fabled Warrior
    • Yumi's Cells
    • Waffles & pancakes
    • Tales of the Unusual 1 & 2 - hard to make it justice. It is creepy but the karma in the stories tend to be *chef kiss*
    • Our Time
    • 10th dimension boys - Pretty sure
    • Refund High School

Happy to hear if there any other people using the apps and what stories you follow and why? I'd love to talk more in-depth about them. Hahaha

  • I mostly have pretty negative feelings about Canva/Webtoon. I was deeply invested in the webcomic scene of the 2000s, and I resent the way Webtoon gobbled it up. There was a lot of hassle and heartbreak back then of course, but there wasn't a single corporate entity lording over it, making arbitrary decisions and pushing "SFW" art and paywalls.

This is inevitably the way things go of course. Big money moves in and the West gets less Wild. There are probably more artists making a living off their work now than there used to be, and that's great, but it ain't my scene.

I did read Tales of the Unusual, and enjoyed it a lot! I also read a good amount of Clinic of Horrors and My Giant Nerd Boyfriend, as well as a few others. Aside from ToU, though, I don't think any webtoons have really clicked with me.

    What is Camlost about?
