Contest Brainstorm: What's in a good contest?

  • Well, we want to bring you some nice contests and prizes. That much is not secret but also would love to have those contests to and prizes to be something you care about. Time after time I've found people not interested in the contest and people interested in the contest but finding it difficult to participate.

As we're a living community and our situation and active members will be changing, so this will remain here for everybody to freely express what they would like to see happening here. The Staff then will be able to take all your input in account for some juicy, fun contests. :D

    • So... what moves you to enter a contest?
    • What kind of contests would you like to see around?
    • Are there any kind of contests or practices that you dislike?
    • Do you like recurrent contests (those that repeats every month or year)?

If you have a great contest idea you rather not to share in public feel free to shoot me a Direct Message.
    Thank you!

  • Well I'm always up for a juicy idea... hrm..

1:[What moves me to enter a contest?] A unique prize, not something trivial like 0.02 bitcoins or a custom wallpaper or signature. Something out of the box maybe even not zelda themed to make it mysterious, the mystery is half the fun on Christmas you know.

2:[What kind of contests would I like to see?] That's a tuffy because I'm terrible at most things so I don't have much experience other than potato sack racing. However, I'd say it would be awesome if there was maybe an art contest you know whomever creates the best fanart, me though I'm no good that and not sure how good everyone else is either. Something that would be cool though is I'm making a grid-based rpg for forums, super simple just trying to get it all together. Perhaps I could share my blueprints with the Admins and see how that comes out via vote or poll I suppose. Or maybe a costume contest you know do some sort of cosplay or something and post your pictures with extra points for anonymity :D

3:[Are there any that I don't like?] On a personal note no, I enjoy a good challenge... that and haven't participated in many. Nothing to mainstream though like planking or whatever that's just annoying.

4:[Do I like recurrent contests?] YESSSSSSSSSSSS that is awesome in my opinion best kind of contest. Only ones worth participating in. Giving you that second chance to prove yourself or second chance to show off your mad skillz XD

  • I think to answer this Contest Brainstorm forum.

    A; My Confidence.
A; Beauty Contest, Smart Contest, Playing Contest.
    A; Handsome Contest.
    A; Sports Contest.

My confidence moves me to enter those contest. The contest has that fun we never have in others. If there is no coincidence, there will be no winning then. Be confidence and be careful!

Beauty, smart contests and playing are I love to enter and see every year. It is so pleasure to enter beauty contest. Which I aim to win! Having so much fun in those beauty contest! Show their smiles, makeups and face beauty to win the hearts of the jugdes. How fun ;) Smart Contests are a test of mind. Some hard questions, answer fast and all to win. If all the person answer everything. Have to concentrate on the question, there is given time. Who did so fast answering, that will be the winner! Playing practices are my fav things to do! How fun;-) playing is good for exercise and have fun. Keep playing!

Handsome Contest is the only contest I dislike. It has nothing to discuss about that. Because it is totally disliked by me.

Yes, I like recurrent contests. there are recurrent contests every years or seasons. They are sports contest. I like them, not much that. We have to play basketball, volleyball, tennis, cricket, how fun;-) I love these to play! So much fun every years and seasons!!

"Sent by Queen Legend on her LG D686".

  • Low-effort creative work collaborations could be fun.

A 1-page fanfic, a 10-minute pencil sketch. These are the kinds of things that adults can fit into their busy lives.

I'm not very interested, personally, in the idea of a contest. Contests have winners and losers. If someone thinks they're going to lose no matter what, because they don't know how to write or how to draw, then they're going to be less motivated to participate. If we did, for example, a 1-page fanfic collaboration. I'd be more interested in seeing a pdf with all the contributions, than I would in seeing a single entry raised above the others for no real reason.

That's just my two cents, of course.

  • I would add, to my previous comment, that if there's a "Winner," that means someone has to pick the winner.

Whoever picks the winner can't really pick themselves. If they do, it looks like / makes them feel like they're being unfair to the others.

Which means that whoever ends up being pegged as the Judge will be less motivated to contribute to the contest. Which is bad, because in a small community like this, we want as many people as possible to be motivated to participate in any group projects.

I definitely vouch for the idea of having collaborations, though I don't see why to have one over the other. I think collaborations should be more ongoing and contests be less often but special. While I agree some people get demotivated by winners-loser, other people thrive with the idea of being the number one. The idea then would be to offer something nice that incentivizes people to give it a go.

Contests and collabs I think both should be something easy enough so people don't feel like discouraged just by thinking how complex it is to participate. Contests can be a good way to attract more visitors, although I am not particularly fond of "post-a-ton" contests or lottery-drawn.

If the winner is selected by everybody's vote instead of staff or one individual it could still motivate everybody to enter. Although being so few at the time it could mean that many would withhold voting before giving it to another contendant which might make things difficult to choose the winner or winners in our current state.

Anyway, although I want to launch some sort of contest with a proper prize I can mail to the winner, I want the contest to be something simple, fun and zelda related. For example, designing an outfit for Link of the newest portable Zelda game announced.

  • There's always this year.
Missed Halloween. Xmas tested the waters with name change but not enough people.
Hopefully, this year will have the activity for it.

Next holidays are Valentines and easter. Maybe @LinkSkywalker with his table top roleplay experience can help us come up with something.

    Hear that @LinkSkywalker

  • If I go to the Discord chat, am I going to see a conversation about how funny it would be to tag me repeatedly in a thread? =P

For Valentines day: come up with a new zelda ship. If we google the ship you submit, and other people are talking about it somewhere, you're disqualified.

Convince us your ship is fuckin hot, in whatever way you think is appropriate. Argue for it, write slash fiction for it, draw porn of it, whatever.

    The hottest ship wins.

If I say yes, will you go to the discord chat? :XD:

And I'll have you know we take tagging very seriously so I hope you attended each and every thread we so desperately required your input.

So... how many alerts were you greeted with?

I like the shipping idea. (n_n)

  • It was 20 or more alerts for sure, I actually assumed they were just old threads and ignored most of them. But I'm starting to notice you tagged me way more than I thought, and maybe I need to start digging through those alerts.
